THE LIFE & THE MESSAGE

Power with gratitude

Sulayman: power held as a trust

01

An inheritance described as a favour

Sulayman inherited Dawud and acknowledged the gifts he had received, including understanding the speech of birds. His story is not simply about possessing extraordinary power. In the ant episode he smiles and immediately turns to a prayer for gratitude and righteous conduct. This connects his gifts to accountability: being able to hear or command more than others is a reason to be thankful and careful with action.

02

The queen of Saba and the test of gratitude

The hoopoe’s news introduces a queen and a people worshipping the sun. Sulayman sends a letter, the queen consults her advisers, and the story develops through an exchange rather than a single unexplained encounter. When her throne is brought, Sulayman describes the event as a test of whether he will be grateful. The account ends with the queen acknowledging wrongdoing and submitting with him to Allah. Her personal name and a marriage to Sulayman are not stated in the passage.

03

Judgement and gifts used under command

The Qur’an remembers the judgement involving a field and gives Sulayman understanding while honouring Dawud as well. Hadith adds a separate dispute between two mothers and a child, resolved through a test that exposed maternal concern. Other passages describe gifts concerning wind and workers, a prayer for forgiveness, and a distinctive kingdom. They do not turn human power into knowledge of everything: the account of his death makes that limit particularly clear.

04

A death the Qur’an actually narrates

Sulayman’s profile differs from many others because the Qur’an gives a particular death episode. He remained supported by his staff until a creature ate through it and his fall revealed the death. The jinn’s continuing labour demonstrated that they had not known the unseen. The episode is part of the biography, but an exact age, date, and grave location are not added to it without an independently assessed source.

What the sources leave open

The queen’s name, a marriage to her, a complete list of wives and children, and a precise death date are not established by these passages.

Moments in the account

Presented in a reading sequence. Undated episodes are not assigned invented dates.

1

Inheriting and understanding

Sulayman inherited Dawud and spoke of being taught the speech of birds. He recognised his gifts as favour from Allah. The narrative does not require inventing a list of his siblings.

2

The ant and gratitude

Hearing an ant warn its community, he smiled and prayed to use Allah’s favour gratefully and to act righteously. A small creature becomes a lesson for a powerful ruler.

3

The hoopoe and Saba

The hoopoe brought news of a queen and her people worshipping the sun. Sulayman sent a letter inviting submission to Allah, and the queen deliberated with her advisers.

4

The throne and the queen

The queen’s throne was brought before her arrival. Sulayman described this as a test of gratitude. The account ends with her acknowledging wrongdoing and submitting with him to Allah. The Qur’an does not name her Bilqis.

5

A kingdom and accountability

The Qur’an describes gifts involving the wind and workers, his prayer for forgiveness and a kingdom, and duties of gratitude. Power is presented with responsibility rather than self-sufficiency.

6

A dispute between two mothers

A hadith reports Sulayman resolving a dispute concerning a surviving child through a test of the women’s responses. The report illustrates judgement; no child was actually divided.

THE FINAL RECORDED ACCOUNT

Life, death & what is known

Death and burial

The Qur’an describes his death while supported by his staff. When a creature ate through it and he fell, the jinn realised they had not known the unseen. The account does not supply his age or a verified grave.
