Ismail is explicitly named when Ibrahim gives thanks for sons in old age. His best-known Qur’anic family episode is the raising of the House with Ibrahim. Both pray for acceptance and for a community devoted to Allah. The account links fatherhood, shared work, and concern for people who will come later. It does not enumerate Ismail’s own children or name a wife.
02
A household remembered for devotion
Surah Maryam describes him as true to his promise and as a messenger and prophet. It also states that he urged his household toward prayer and charity. This is an important part of his biography beyond the building of the House: devotion was taught within ordinary relationships and accompanied by reliability. Surah al-Anbiya names him among the patient, and Surah Sad among the excellent.
03
Makkah traditions and the later ancestral line
Hadith provides the longer Makkah account associated with Hajar and Ismail, supplementing the Qur’an’s shorter references. A separate authentic report establishes Muhammad’s descent through Ismail’s descendants. The historical list from Adnan to Muhammad is included as a labelled genealogical record; the intervening generations between Ismail and Adnan remain a visible gap. Ismail’s role in this tree is therefore that of a distant ancestor, never a direct father of Muhammad.
What the sources leave open
This profile does not treat the unnamed son in 37:102 as an explicit Qur’anic naming of Ismail. His full descendants and precise death details are not recorded in these citations.

Moments in the account
Presented in a reading sequence. Undated episodes are not assigned invented dates.
1
A son in Ibrahim’s prayers
Ibrahim gives thanks for Ismail and Ishaq in his old age. Ismail’s connection to his father is explicit, rather than inferred from a modern family chart.
2
Hajar and Makkah
Authentic hadith relates Hajar’s search for water, Zamzam, and Ismail growing among Jurhum. It mentions two successive wives without naming them. These details supplement the Qur’an’s much shorter family account.
3
Building and praying together
He and Ibrahim raised the House’s foundations and prayed for acceptance. Their work is described alongside concern for future generations.
4
Promises and worship
The Qur’an praises Ismail as true to his promise, a messenger and prophet, and one who urged his household toward prayer and charity.
5
A distant descendant
An authentic hadith places the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ within the descendants of Ismail through Kinana, Quraysh, and Banu Hashim. The explorer marks this as ancestry across omitted generations.
