Understand Muhammad’s role in Islam, the Qur’an and Sunnah, and where to read his life and family story.
The final messenger in Islamic belief
Muslims believe Muhammad ﷺ is the final prophet and messenger of Allah. He called people to worship one God and received the Qur’an. Islam understands his mission as continuing the message of earlier prophets, rather than introducing worship of a new deity.
A human messenger, not divine
The Qur’an describes the messenger as a human being receiving revelation. Muslims love and honour him, but do not treat him as God or direct worship to him. The testimony of faith joins belief in Allah alone with acceptance of Muhammad as His messenger.
The Qur’an, Sunnah and Hadith
The Qur’an is the revelation Muslims believe he received from Allah. Sunnah means his exemplary teaching and practice. Hadith are transmitted reports about his words, actions and approvals; their authenticity and interpretation require study. These terms are related but not interchangeable.
