A messenger and a ship

The Qur’an identifies Yunus as a messenger and recounts his going to a laden ship, the drawing of lots, and the fish swallowing him. It does not give the ship’s name or a modern location.

A prayer in darkness

In distress he called upon Allah, affirming His oneness and acknowledging his own wrong. Allah answered and delivered him; the passage extends hope of deliverance to believers.

Recovery on the shore

He was cast onto an open shore while ill, and a plant was made to grow over him. The narrative then mentions a mission to a great number of people who believed.

A people who believed

The people of Yunus are singled out as a community whose belief brought relief from worldly punishment. This is a story of response and mercy, not only of the fish.

A lesson in patience

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was instructed to be patient and not be like the companion of the fish in his distress. Allah chose Yunus and made him among the righteous.

His father Matta

An authentic report uses Yunus’s patronymic and explains it as attribution to his father Matta. This supplies a named relative beyond the Qur’an’s account of his mission.
