Understand the pilgrimage to Makkah, the role of the Kaaba and the difference between Hajj and Umrah.

01 · TAKE IT AT YOUR PACE

Hajj is one of the five pillars

Hajj is the pilgrimage to Makkah required once in a lifetime for Muslims who meet the conditions of ability. Financial and physical ability matter. It takes place during designated days of Dhul-Hijjah and includes rites beyond visiting the Ka‘bah.

02 · TAKE IT AT YOUR PACE

Umrah is a distinct pilgrimage

Umrah includes entering ihram, tawaf around the Ka‘bah, sa‘i between Safa and Marwah, and cutting or shortening the hair according to the applicable rules. It can generally be performed outside the Hajj days. Scholars differ on its legal status; it does not replace the obligation of Hajj.

03 · TAKE IT AT YOUR PACE

The Ka‘bah, tawaf and salah

Muslims face the Ka‘bah when performing salah, and pilgrims perform tawaf around it as prescribed worship. These are different acts. Muslims worship Allah, not the building or the Black Stone. Our Ka‘bah timeline explains its scriptural foundations and later history.

Preparation comes before travel

Learn the rites with a qualified guide before making arrangements. Current permits, entry rules, vaccination requirements and booking procedures can change, so check official authorities for the dates you plan to travel. This introductory page is not a live travel or permit service.

Common questions

Does Umrah count as Hajj?

No. They are distinct pilgrimages with different rites and timing. Performing Umrah does not fulfil the Hajj obligation.

Do all Muslims have to travel to Makkah immediately?

Hajj is required for those who meet its conditions of ability, not simply for everyone immediately on entering Islam.
